Formed in 1780, Jefferson County is bordered by the Ohio River across the bridge fom the state of Indiana. The elevation in Jefferson County above sea level ranges from almost 400 to approximately 900 feet. Jefferson County's population was 693,604 in 2000, with the land area of about 385.09 square miles, an average of 1801.1 people per square mile. The most populous county in the state of Kentucky, Jefferson County was one of the original counties in the Kentucky territory of Virginia. Louisville is the county seat of Jefferson County.

In 2000 voters approved a merged city-county government between Louisville and Jefferson County, and in 2003 the Louisville/Jefferson County Metro Government or Louisville Metro, for short, was established. Jefferson County now includes more than 90 incorporated cities, many of which are totally surrounded by the city of Louisville.
